"Most of those triple-digit returns that venture-capital firms are so fond of reporting will never materialize because they are not based on reality," contends Stephen N. (Steve) Lisson, Austin-based editor of InsiderVC.com, which tracks performance. "Sure, the dot.com fallout has been gruesome, but much of its effect still remains hidden. Even today many VC funds are still reluctant to write down their investments because they want to keep attracting new capital."
